About Us

Budd-Falen Law Offices, L.L.C. has been serving property owners for over thirty years. Founded by Frank Falen and Karen Budd-Falen, the firm was known as the Falen Law Offices, L.L.C. while Karen withdrew from the firm from 2018-2020 to serve as the Deputy Solicitor for Wildlife and Parks in the Department of the Interior.

We provide legal representation regarding endangered species, clean water, private property ownership and use, federal lands, local government involvement, local zoning and property rights, energy law, and other areas of law affecting ranchers, farmers, and other landowners in the federal courts of the United States of America and in the various state courts where our attorneys are individually licensed to appear (Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming). The attorneys of this firm have also represented clients in other states for specific matters when those states allowed our attorneys to appear pro hac vice or assist in matters out of the courtroom.

We represent industry clients in BLM and Forest Service appeals. We also represent clients in litigation arising under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the Federal Lands Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Clean Water Act (CWA) and other environmental statutes. In addition, we represent landowners with issues related to oil and gas, wind energy, solar energy, pipelines, eminent domain and condemnation.

The firm traces its roots back five generations in Wyoming to the family ranch started by Karen Budd-Falen’s family. Frank Falen is a third-generation rancher in the Oregon, Idaho, Nevada corner. This tradition of federal land use and private property ownership continues today as we seek to protect rural traditions and ways of life while preserving natural resources in a manner consistent with multiple and wise use of the land.  Our extensive experience in generational transitions of farms and ranches provides us with unique knowledge in estate planning matters.
